Oral History Interview of Colgate W. Darden by Ann L. S. Southwell and Michael F. Plunkett [manuscript]
In this oral history interview of former UVA President Darden, Darden briefly discusses the 1954 reorganization of student government following student complaints of administrative overreach. (The 1954 gang rape is necessary to understanding the context of this discussion although it is never referred to in the transcript.) In this interview, Darden blames himself for the failure of the 1954 reorganization, saying: "It was my fault, not the students; they engaged in it with a good deal of gusto but I had the Student Council investigated we both did, and the trialgroup. I split them in two then and set up the Judiciary Committee. I don't know whether it's still as the Judiciary Committee up there now in effect but that separated the trial thing. I ought to have had sense enough to have known that, especially in law practice. I ought to have known that you couldn't have the investigative arm and the court in the same group; they have to be separated" (p. 22). [Manuscript date is approximately 1972.]
