#HOOSGotYourBack started as a bystander intervention campaign during the fall 2014 semester. Â The goal of #HOOSGotYourBack is to empower students to become active bystanders in the community.Â
#HOOSGotYourBack Pledge Day occurred on the Lawn on October 23, 2014. Over 300 students signed the #HOOSGotYourBack Pledge, which stated that pledge participants will combat sexual and gender-based violence.Â
Find Your Voice was an initiative started by University of Virginia student Andrew Burrill to bring drama students together with non-drama students. Â In the first show of this series, Find Your Voice partnered with the #HoosGotYourBack campaign to create a thirty minute theater show about sexual violence and the impact of bystander intervention.
The Society for Awakening Souls and Second Year Council sponsored Hugs for Hannah. Â At this event, students hugged and wrote letters to those who assisted in the investigation of second-year student Hannah Graham's disappearance.
The "Red Zone" refers to the time period (between when college classes start and Thanksgiving break occurs) during which about half of sexual assaults occur on college campuses. Â At the University of Virginia, #HoosGotYourBack promoted the wearing of #HoosGotYourBack t-shirts during the "Red Zone" period in order to promote bystander intervention and sexual violence prevention.
