Papers of John Hartwell Cocke

Two diary entries of John Hartwell Cocke, a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, that mention Jefferson's relationship to Sally Hemings. Cocke often complained about how slave owners had children with their slave women, stating Jefferson as an example. Cocke also discussed how slave owners keeping a slave woman is like "a substitute for a wife."
